As a music teacher and performer, I understand that we all need a little reassurance at the best of times. Especially when dealing with small children or planning the musical elements of your special day, I thought you would all like to know a little bit about my qualifications and experience.
From a teaching perspective, I have just recently opened my own studio here in Halifax, after 4 years of working under a commercially owned studio in St. John’s, Newfoundland. I began teaching at the beginning of my second year of studies at Memorial University’s School of Music. My first student was 5 years old and my second was 45. So, right from the start I quickly learned to adapt to the needs of each student and their specific circumstance. Whether you have always wanted to learn how to play the piano or the flute, or heard a great song on the radio that you’d love to learn, I can find the path to learning that is just right for you.
From a wedding standpoint, the journey began for me at a very young age. The first wedding I had the pleasure of contributing to was that of a family friend. I was 16 at the time, and it was the first of many weddings that I would be a part of. It is always such an honour to be asked to take part of such a personal and special moment in someone’s life. With another 25 plus weddings behind me, I am confident in my ability to find the perfect pieces for you and your spouse. If you have classical or more popular musical tastes, we can work together to find just what you are looking for.
Growing up in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, I was fortunate to be surrounded by great musicians. Although I didn’t realize it at the time, they would grow to have a great influence on my musical growth. I began my piano studies at the age of 7 and my flute studies in concert band at age 12. At 18, I decided to take a big leap and apply to Memorial University’s prestigious music school. Throughout my 5 years there, I had the great priviledge of studying with Mihoko Burton, Michelle Cheramy, and Christine Gangelhoff. Each of these professors came from profoundly diverse backgrounds which are now reflected through my wide range of musical tastes. I obtained my Bachelor of Music degree from MUN in May of 2007. Most currently, I have been granted the licensing to operate classes from the Kindermusik program. I completed a 12 week online training course required to teach this unique program that introduces music to children at a very early stage. I am excited to share that these classes will be available beginning January 2008.
